Friday Faves

*This new album, Love Remains, by Hillary Scott (of Lady Antebellum) and her family is so great. She took a year off to make a Christian music album and it’s full of some new songs and some older hymns (with a bluegrass twist).  I love every song on it and have had it on repeat.

*Stranger Things on Netflix. You guys.  This show is something else.  Let’s sidestep how awesome the 80’s cinematography, outfits, set design and music are, because they are exactly that…awesome…but the storyline and plot are unlike any other show I’ve watched.  It’s honestly like a cross between ET and The Goonies, which we all know are two of the greatest 80’s movies of all times, but also way scarier (yes, scarier than Sloth, who used to scare the bejeezuz out of me).  It’s totally sci-fi, not at all realistic and you need to go in with an open mind, but I’m telling you, it’s really good.  We finished it in one week (just 8 episodes).  Which has now got us looking for a new show.  Any suggestions??

*Caroline Banks Jewelry. I’ve probably mentioned my sweet friend’s jewelry line before.  She’s local here in Chattanooga, but you can order from her website.  I have several pieces, and love them all.  They are made really well and different from the usual pieces you find in other mainstream stores.  Plus she’s a mom of three littles, running a small business, which I think is awesome.

*I’m trying to get all my wear out of my summer Lily before fall gets here. Even though it will likely still be warm through September, I have this weird thing about wearing “summer clothes” once September 1st rolls around.  I like to pull out my fall outfits, even if that just means fall colors.  For the time being though, I’m loving all my Lily brights!

*On that note…48 days until fall, but who’s counting?!  I do like summer, but man, once August gets here I am itching for some cooler weather and changing leaves. I picked up a few things from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, all of which were definitely fall esque’ and it really got me in the mood.  Then I randomly bought some pumpkin spice flavor K-cups for my Keurig (I know, I know, way too early for this) and it made me all warm and fuzzy inside.  Then I noticed some potted mums at my local market and it was almost too much.  I did refrain myself from buying the mums, but I did not refrain myself from a creating a new board on Pinterest called “Fall porch decorations.”  Because, balance.

*You guys, Matt sent me flowers for completing Whole30. Matt has always been pretty good at surprising me with flowers at work (I absolutely love fresh flowers), but this was particular out of the blue and thoughtful.  Here’s the funny part though…when I opened the card it read “Happy 30th Birthday!  Love, Matt” (my birthday is in December, and I am 34).  I was literally so confused and kept trying to rack my brain to see if it was some sort of inside joke I had forgotten about.  Or I just assumed it was a mistake and I had received someone else’s beautiful flowers.  I called Matt to see if he had sent flowers and after he confirmed that he did, I told him what the card said and with exasperation he informed me that the card was supposed to read, “Happy 30th Day!”  As in, happy completion of Whole30.  We got a laugh out of that, but still, the flowers are beautiful and it was incredibly thoughtful.  This was even after I totally dropped the ball and failed to finish the #loveyourspousechallenge on Facebook, which I had forgotten about until this morning when I saw someone else’s post.  Looks like days 5-7 will all be happening today.

*I had a bagel this morning. I feel like this was my first, true splurge post-Whole30, and it was really good.  I got cream cheese and everything.  It was glorious.  That is all.

 Happy Friday, y’all!

20 Birthday Questions at 3 Years Old

We are back from our most amazing trip, and while there will be several upcoming posts about our adventure, I wanted to get this up before I forgot, considering Asher Wade’s 3rd birthday was a week and a half ago.  I thought it would be fun to start asking him the same 20 questions each year on his birthday to see how the answers change.  I thought this would be the first year where he would actually answer them intelligibly, and although all of his answers didn’t exactly make sense, he did pretty well and answered pretty quickly!  We asked him these questions on his actual birthday last week (while on board the Disney Dream, laying in bed, watching The Lion King, with our sliding door open, listening to the waves outside….take me back NOW).

  6. What is your favorite outfit? Good Dinosaur shirt and blue shorts (Lord help us when he wants to start dressing himself because this would not match at all…)

  9. What is your favorite animal? Giraffe
  10. What is your favorite song? Paw Patrol theme song

  12. Who is your best friend? Daddy  (we’ll just forget the fact that I carried you for 9 months, got really fat, birthed you, nursed you for 2.5 freaking years….whatevs)
  13. What is your favorite cereal? Cinnamon squares
  14. What is your favorite thing to do outside? Pool
  15. What is your favorite drink? Chocolate moo moo (a/k/a milk)

Friday’s Faves

High five, it’s Friday y’all!  After a pretty hectic week at work, I am very excited for the weekend to be here.  I am especially excited because we have nothing on the agenda.  At least nothing set in stone.  Well, I do have to go get my hair done this afternoon, but I rather enjoy that hour to myself to read a magazine and catch up with my hilarious stylist, so I consider this a to-do item that I don’t mind.  Also, after a week of horrible weather, it’s supposed to be sunny and gorgeous, albeit a little cold (come on Spring!), and I’m sure we will be spending some time outdoors soaking up that vitamin D.

Some faves as of late…

* Walking in to my office on Monday morning and seeing this sitting on my chair….

Monday mornings are exponentially better when you find Girl Scout cookies sitting on your chair. #samoasforlife

* Who is watching The People v. O.J. Simpson on FX?  Matt and I are addicted.  I think the acting is so good.  I was totally skeptical of Ross playing Robert Kardashian (or any sort of serious role in general), but he’s great.  Sarah Paulson is perfect as well.  And John Travolta as Shapiro…those eyebrows kill me!  Of course Cuba Gooding, Jr. is great as O.J.  The whole cast is just perfect.

* I know I mentioned my new Vitamix last week, but seriously, I am a juicing, smoothie-making fiend!  I can’t get enough of this thing.  We visited a local produce stand and stocked up on all sorts of fruits and vegetables and I’ve been going to town.  I make a batch of juice most nights to have throughout the next day.  So far my favorite concoction has been 1 orange (peeled), ½ green apple (de-seeded), handful of red grapes, ½ cucumber (peeled), 5 large chunks of pineapple and a large handful of spinach.  My only issue is that my juices seem to come out a little frothy.  Does anyone know how to remedy that?  It doesn’t really bother me, but I feel like all that extra air makes me a little bloated.

* Continuing with food, I love these Chobani Greek yogurt mix-in’s.  My favorite one is actually the chocolate peanut butter even though it’s a lot higher in calories than what I prefer, but the 100 calorie varieties are good too.  Strawberry and chocolate can do no wrong in my opinion.

* Justin Bieber’s new album.  There.  I said it.  I have #bieberfever

Oh, and something new starting next Friday…

I am by NO means a fashion’ista, or a fashion blogger, or really super big on fashion in general.  I mean, I like clothes (duh) and I like to shop (online) and I’m a sucker for a good sale, but I definitely have a “standard style” and I’m not much to venture away from that.  Right now leggings and flowy tunics are my jam.  In a couple months it will be comfy sundresses.  I feel like I wear the same version of different outfits every day, but I just like what I like.  I’m always rushed in the morning and the last thing I want to do is spend time putting together an outfit.  Most importantly, I like to be comfortable.  I came across an Instagram post the other day where this girl was talking about a “Pinterest fashion challenge” where you have to commit to one month of styling your outfits based off looks you find on Pinterest.  So basically you search Pinterest and pin one outfit for each day of the month and then recreate it with whatever you already have in your own closet (no buying new clothes-that’s cheating!), and then posting a side-by-side picture of the Pinterest ensemble and your own inspired ensemble.  Fun, right?  I am going to try it for the month of March!  I’m probably going to focus on Monday-Friday only because I honestly live in workout clothes on the weekends, but we will see how it goes.  I’ll post my five days of Pinterest inspired outfits on Friday afternoons.  I’m hoping this will encourage me to venture out of my go-to ensemble, and help maximize my closetful of clothes that often go untouched.  Maybe it will give you some inspiration as well:-)

Happy weekend!

A few more pictures from the past weekend

Although the big birthday party extravaganza took up most of the weekend, we did have some more opportunities for outdoor fun.  Spring in Alabama is kind of the best thing ever.

Somebody got his car seat turned around finally, and he's pretty excited about it.

Southern Living for me, Mickey Mouse for him, vitamin D for both of us

First visit to the pool! Looking forward to spending many weekends here this summer!

Let me tell you a little story about this next picture.  This is a perfect example of things you swear you won’t do when you’re a parent.  First off, as soon as we walked in to the grocery store Asher Wade insisted on getting in one of those germ infested difficult to maneuver grocery carts with the car attached to the front.  We gave in.  Then he threw a fit at the checkout line because he spotted the M&M’s.  We gave in.  Then he basically demanded to ride the mechanical horse (which is actually free because the store provides the quarters…kind of a nice perk).  We gave in.  Then when the ride finished, he lost his mind.  Like laid in the middle of the floor of the supermarket and had a writhing, roll around, kicking, screaming tantrum.  I actually burst into laughter because you know, sometimes you just have to have a sense of humor about this whole parenting gig.  Matt was furious though.  Yanked him off the floor, swatted his behind and carried him over his shoulder to the car.  Asher Wade continued to cry and wail and beg for his M&M’s, which Matt promptly denied him of.  Two minutes later, driving away, us completely embarrassed by the whole charade, Asher Wade calmed down and with his sweet puppy dog eyes, requested his M&M’s.  We gave in.  You win some, you lose some;)

The (somewhat embarrassing) story behind a name

I had to laugh when, during my run the other night, this song popped up on my playlist for the first time in forever…

Notice the name of the singer?  I hate to admit it, but this is where we got the idea for the name “Asher.”  Yes, it’s true.  Our precious Asher Wade earned the first part of his namesake from a rapper that has a big fat EXPLICIT on the cover of his records.  Back when we were discussing names, “Asher” was not a common name at all, at least not to us.  We had never heard it, except as being the name of this rapper that had a song that we both had on our running playlists.  It’s not like we run around listening to explicit rap songs, really much at all, but this song is just one of those that is kind of catchy and funny, and some times you just have to sacrifice your music morals for a song with a good running beat.  Any-who, we’d always liked that name and we remembered it when we started discussing a name for our soon-to-be-born baby boy.  It was actually the ONLY boy’s name we both liked (the “Wade” part was a given because it’s a family name), so it was kind of a no-brainer.  We just figured we didn’t have to necessarily tell people where “Asher” came from and could just leave it at it was the only name we agreed on.

Fast forward to when we told my grandfather the name we had chosen.  My sweet, bible thumping, Southern Baptist grandfather that probably knows every single person ever mentioned in the Bible.  “Well that’s a wonderful Godly name from the Bible.  Asher is in Genesis and he was the founder of the Tribe of Asher.  The name means ‘happy blessing’.  You have chosen a good name.”  Why yes.  Yes we did.  We were pretty happy that given the cold-hard truth, we now had a good story to go by as necessary.  So depending on our audience, when asked how we picked the name, we either tell them the good Christian version, or we tell them the scandalous truth….our first born son was named after an explicit white rapper guy that sings about keg stands, late night shenanigans and passing out in the bread aisle of his local grocery store.  Some times the truth just hurts, y’all.  Hopefully Asher Wade has the same sense of humor that his mom and dad do:-)

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday

Asher Wade is rocking some skinny jeans these days….

I would have never thought the words “Asher Wade” and “skinny jeans” would be in the same sentence.  Ever.  However wouldn’t you know it that the “Slouchy Skinny Jeans” from Old Navy fit #toddlerAW the best of any jeans we’ve tried.  I guess there is some skinny in him after all;)

A few things just to prove I’m still alive….

  1. Work has been cray-zee.  Like really, really crazy.  I’m so brain-dead when I get home in the evenings that I can’t even conjure up a post, hence my sporadic appearances on the ole blog lately.
  2. #toddlerAW also passed a long a little stomach bug.  Good times in the McWilliams’ household this past weekend:\
  3. Before the aforementioned stomach bug took over, we did venture out to a local fall festival on Saturday.  AW had his first experience with a bounce house and it was pretty comical.  I thought he might get scared, especially since there were much bigger kids jumping around like a bunch of banshee, but he held his own and was all smiles.  He never quite figured out how to manuever around, but it won’t be long before he’s one of the banshee’s himself.
  4. Speaking of Asher Wade, and I haven’t even mentioned this on here yet, but we moved him from our beloved daycare to a home care setting. This has been a huge transition for us (who am I kidding, it’s been a HUGE transition for me, but AW could really care less as long as there are hugs, snacks and toys). This was a big decision for us and we fretted and prayed over it for several weeks, but ultimately it just seemed like the right decision. We are really happy with the new arrangement and I love that he’s in a home, with only a few kids, and being cared for by someone who obviously loves those crazy toddlers. Plus, I’m hoping this will keep the germs and sickness (Ebola?) at bay as we roll in to flu season.
  5. Sorry to keep talking about the stomach bug, but…it came upon me shortly after eating at Mellow Mushroom on Saturday.  The last time we had Mellow Mushroom was when I was around 6/7 weeks pregnant and the little bout of morning/afternoon sickness I had during my pregnancy started the morning after that visit.  This past weekend was the first time I have been able to even consider Mellow Mushroom since then because I just associated it with feeling bad.  Now what happens?  I finally decide Mellow Mushroom sounds ok again and then I end up with a stomach bug!  I’m pretty positive the bug actually came from AW because he had it and Matt got it around the same time as me, but still, maybe I’ll be able to visit Mellow Mushroom again in another couple of years?? #GIproblems
  6. In my obvious inability to stop talking about my stomach bug, I also need to mention the fact that the only thing I’ve been able to handle since Saturday is fruit.  When I was feeling crappy during that first trimester of my pregnancy I was also only able to handle fruit.  Aversion to Mellow Mushroom, plus cravings for fruit, plus generally feeling blah….if I didn’t know any better, I would be very, very concerned right now.
